Udayagiri & Khandagiri Caves

Udayagiri & Khandagiri Caves

The Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves, located on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, are ancient rock‑cut caves that date back to the 2nd century BCE. Carved during the reign of King Kharavela of the Chedi dynasty, these caves served as residential blocks for Jain monks and are among the most important archaeological sites in Odisha.

The caves are adorned with inscriptions, sculptures, and carvings that depict royal processions, animals, and mythological scenes. Udayagiri, meaning “Sunrise Hill,” has 18 caves, while Khandagiri, or “Broken Hill,” has 15 caves. Together, they offer a fascinating glimpse into Odisha’s spiritual and artistic heritage.

Travel Appeal: Visitors are captivated by the serene atmosphere, historical significance, and panoramic views of Bhubaneswar from the hilltops. The caves are a perfect blend of history, religion, and natural beauty, making them a must‑visit for culture enthusiasts and history lovers.
